Abstract
In present work mucoadhesive buccal film of acyclovir were prepared by using solvent casting method. Polymers like HPMC, SCMC, Eudragit RL-100 and RS-100 were used to prepared the buccal films. Acyclovir is an antiviral drug which is widely used in the treatment of Herpes simplex virus infections. It has poor bioavailability due to high hepatic first pass metabolism. Therefore, one of the promising methods to avoid high hepatic first pass metabolism by administering the drug through buccal mucosa. All the prepared mucoadhesive buccal films were analyzed for FTIR analysis for the compatibility of drug and excipients. Further, all the films evaluated for their pH, Physical properties, spreadability, folding endurance, drug content analysis and in-vitro permeation study. From all the result it was concluded that among the acyclovir loaded buccal films, the formulation F4 containing HPMC and SCMC was found to be the best formulation showing to good drug content (75.6%), highest swelling index (57.667±4.25), highest in-vitro residence time (1.46±0.016), rough surface that is helpful in the better absorption and greatest drug release (92.84%).
