Abstract
Avipattikar Churna is a classical Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation extensively described in Ayurvedic texts such as Sharangadhara Samhita and Bhaishajya Ratnavali. It is primarily indicated in disorders associated with aggravated Pitta dosha, particularly Amlapitta, Agnimandya, Vibandha, and various gastrointestinal ailments. The formulation contains multiple medicinal herbs including Trikatu, Triphala, Musta, Vidanga, Lavanga, Ela, Patra, Trivrit, and Sharkara, which collectively exhibit Deepana, Pachana, Pittashamaka, Anulomana, and Mridu Rechana properties. Contemporary scientific investigations have demonstrated its gastroprotective, anti-ulcer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and laxative activities. Phytochemical studies revealed the presence of bioactive constituents such as piperine, gallic acid, eugenol, gingerols, flavonoids, tannins, and embelin that contribute to its pharmacological efficacy. Standardization studies using organoleptic evaluation, physicochemical parameters, and chromatographic fingerprinting have also been reported. Clinical observations suggest significant improvement in hyperacidity, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, constipation, and dyspepsia. The formulation is considered relatively safe when administered in recommended therapeutic doses. This review article compiles classical references, Ayurvedic pharmacodynamics, phytochemical constituents, pharmacological activities, standardization methods, and therapeutic applications of Avipattikar Churna with emphasis on its role in modern gastrointestinal disorders. The review also highlights the need for further evidence-based clinical studies to establish its therapeutic potential scientifically.
