Abstract
Dūṣīviṣa is a unique and clinically significant concept described in classical Ayurvedic literature, referring to latent or cumulative toxins that are retained within the body for prolonged periods without being fully eliminated. Unlike acute Viṣa (poison), which produces immediate and severe toxic manifestations, Dūṣīviṣa remains dormant in a subdued state and gradually vitiates the doṣas, dhātus, and srotas, eventually manifesting as chronic and degenerative pathological conditions. In the present era of rapid industrialization and environmental degradation, human beings are continuously exposed to low-level toxic substances including environmental pollutants, pesticides, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic, adulterated food, alcohol, tobacco smoke, plastics, and industrial chemicals. These substances accumulate within the body over time and adversely affect multiple organ systems, with the male reproductive system being particularly vulnerable. Male infertility and sexual dysfunction have emerged as major global public health challenges, with a steady worldwide decline in sperm count, semen quality, and reproductive hormone levels documented over the past five decades. Ayurveda recognizes the intricate relationship between Shukra Dhātu (the reproductive tissue) and overall vitality, immunity, and longevity. Chronic exposure to Dūṣīviṣa can lead to Shukra Duṣṭi (qualitative and quantitative impairment of reproductive tissue), Klaibya (erectile dysfunction and loss of sexual potency), Alpashukratva or Shukra Kṣaya (oligospermia and reduced semen volume), and Bandhatva (male infertility). Modern scientific studies corroborate these findings by demonstrating that environmental toxins induce oxidative stress, endocrine disruption, mitochondrial dysfunction, sperm DNA damage, and suppression of testosterone biosynthesis. The present review aims to critically explore the impact of Dūṣīviṣa on male genital organs from a classical Ayurvedic perspective and systematically correlate it with contemporary biomedical concepts of reproductive toxicology. Ayurvedic management strategies involving Pañcakarma Śodhana (biodetoxification procedures), Agada therapy (antidotal formulations), Rasāyana (rejuvenation), and Shukra-vardhaka dravyas (spermatogenic herbs) are explored as integrative therapeutic options for restoring male reproductive health and vitality.
