Mani Dharan and Ratna Kalpana in Ayurveda: A Critical Review of Gemstone Use in Jyotisha and Rasa Shastra

Among the many dimensions of classical Indian healing knowledge, two practices stand apart for their reliance on the inherent properties of naturally occurring gemstones: the Rasa Shastra tradition of Ratna Kalpana, which involves the pharmaceutical conversion of gems into internally administered medicines, and the Jyotisha tradition of Mani Dharan, which involves wearing specific gems on the body to channel beneficial planetary vibrations. Although these approaches appear to belong to separate intellectual domains, they share a common mineralogical vocabulary, an overlapping classification of principal stones, and a strikingly consistent map of the human body systems that each gem is said to govern. The nine principal gemstones — collectively designated as the Navaratna — occupy the centre of both frameworks, each stone assigned to one of the nine celestial bodies of Vedic cosmology and simultaneously described in pharmaceutical texts with specific Rasa (taste quality), Virya (thermogenic action), Guna (physical character), Vipaka (metabolic outcome), and Prabhava (distinctive pharmacological action). In the Rasa Shastra tradition, raw gems are subjected to multi-stage Shodhana (purification through repeated heating and quenching in prescribed liquids) before undergoing Marana (controlled incineration in sealed crucibles at graduated temperatures) to yield nano-scale Bhasma or cold-triturated Pishti preparations whose therapeutic scope encompasses chronic wasting diseases, reproductive disorders, neurological conditions, and Rasayana applications. In the Jyotisha tradition, gems of prescribed minimum weight and verified optical purity are set in specific metals and worn in designated fingers after ritual consecration so as to function as vibrational transducers of planetary electromagnetic radiation. The present review assembles, organises, and critically evaluates this body of knowledge by drawing on the Brihat Samhita, Rasaratnasamuccaya, Rasatarangini, Charaka Samhita, and related classical authorities. Six thematic data tables covering Navagraha-Ratna correspondence, pharmacodynamic attributes, Shodhana protocols, major formulations, Dosha-Dhatu-Srotas mapping, and gemstone quality defects are presented alongside an appraisal of nanomedicine findings, spectroscopic data, and photobiomodulation research that collectively offer a rational scientific framework for understanding why these preparations may work. The review concludes that an evidence-based integrative research agenda is both feasible and urgently needed.
