Abstract
Nutraceuticals are food-derived bioactive products that confer both nutritional sustenance and therapeutic benefits beyond basic dietary requirements. The global burden of non-communicable diseases, including metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disorders, obesity, and immune deficiencies, has intensified scientific interest in nutraceutical research and its integration into preventive healthcare. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, has long acknowledged the inseparable relationship between Ahara (diet), Aushadhi (medicine), and Vihara (lifestyle) in the preservation of health and prevention of disease. Classical Ayurvedic treatises, including the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam, describe an extensive repertoire of dietary substances — including Amla (Emblica officinalis), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Triphala, milk, ghee, and honey — that collectively function as nutraceutical agents due to their documented Rasayana (rejuvenating), Balya (strength-promoting), Medhya (nootropic), and Deepaniya (digestive stimulant) properties. Rasayana therapy, a dedicated branch of Ayurvedic clinical practice, directly mirrors the modern concept of nutraceuticals by promoting cellular regeneration, tissue nourishment, and systemic resistance to disease. Contemporary pharmacological and clinical studies have validated the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, adaptogenic, hepatoprotective, and anti-dyslipidaemic activities of many Ayurvedic nutraceutical agents. Nutraceuticals occupy a unique position in the health continuum — functioning as both food and medicine — and their daily use can substantially reduce the incidence and severity of lifestyle-associated disorders, improve cognitive function, enhance longevity, and support healthy ageing. This comprehensive review elucidates the concept of nutraceuticals through an integrated Ayurvedic and modern scientific lens, highlighting their role in immunity enhancement, mental health support, digestive wellbeing, prevention of lifestyle disorders, and healthy ageing, with specific reference to classical Ayurvedic drug descriptions and contemporary research evidence.
