Abstract
Background and Aim:
Ensuring patient safety through adherence to International Patient Safety Goals (IPSGs) is a foundational component of modern healthcare delivery. This study assessed the awareness and compliance of healthcare professionals regarding IPSGs in a tertiary care hospital.
Methods:
This cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 90 healthcare professionals (30 doctors, 30 nurses, 30 technicians) using a structured questionnaire assessing knowledge of the six IPSGs. Compliance data were gathered from 300 patient records through IPSG-based audits.
Results:
Overall awareness of IPSGs was highest among physicians (78%), followed by nurses (74%) and technicians (57%). Goal 1 (Patient Identification) had the highest awareness (77%), while Goal 5 (HAI prevention) was least known (52%). Compliance was perfect (100%) for Goal 4 (Safe Surgery), while other goals showed partial non-compliance, especially Goal 6 (Fall Risk) and Goal 2 (Communication), with non-compliance rates of 29% and 27% respectively.
Conclusion:
The study reveals moderate awareness and varying compliance with IPSGs across professional categories. While surgical safety protocols are well-established, gaps remain in areas such as infection control and communication. Targeted educational programs, process standardization, and role-specific training are essential to enhance patient safety outcomes.
