Abstract
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as dengue fever, schistosomiasis, malaria, and tuberculosis pose significant challenges to global health, particularly in low-resource settings where conventional healthcare infrastructure is inadequate. Addressing these diseases effectively necessitates innovative approaches in disease management and drug development. Medicinal plants, with their rich historical use and burgeoning potential in modern therapeutics, offer a promising solution. Historical records from ancient texts like 'The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine' and 'Papyrus Ebers' highlight the longstanding role of plant-based remedies in healthcare. Contemporary research focuses on identifying and characterizing bioactive compounds from these plants, employing techniques such as chromatography and mass spectrometry to elucidate their therapeutic potential. These compounds exhibit a range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiparasitic effects, which are crucial for combating NTDs. The development of plant-derived therapeutics involves rigorous preclinical and clinical evaluation to assess efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action. However, integrating these treatments into mainstream healthcare systems requires navigating regulatory challenges and addressing ethical concerns, such as protecting traditional knowledge and ensuring equitable access. Emerging technologies, including metabolomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics, are revolutionizing the field by enabling more efficient discovery and development of plant-based drugs. These advances promise to enhance our ability to develop sustainable and effective treatments for NTDs, ultimately improving global health outcomes.
