Abstract

Monkey-pox, a zoonotic viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, has recently gained global attention due to its resurgence and expanding geographic range. This clinical review explores the etiology, manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of monkey pox. The monkey pox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus, is primarily transmitted through contact with infected animals or humans. Historically limited to Central and West Africa, recent outbreaks have highlighted the virus’s potential for wider spread. Clinically, monkey pox presents with a flu-like prodrome followed by a distinctive rash, and its severity can range from mild to severe. Diagnosis involves clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, and laboratory testing, with PCR being the primary method for confirmation. Although no specific antiviral treatment is universally approved, medications such as tecovirimat and brincidofovir show promise. The review emphasizes the importance of early recognition, accurate diagnosis, and effective management in controlling monkey pox outbreaks.
