Abstract
Hypertension is a chronic disorder characterized by a persistently elevated blood pressure exceeding 140/90 mmHg or greater. The prevalence of hypertension is extremely high among the global population, and many of them depend on modern medicines to manage their blood pressure. Dietary and lifestyle changes can improve blood pressure control and decrease the risk of health complications, although drug treatment is still often necessary. Many antihypertensive agents are used for treatment of hypertension, but they are associated with many harmful and undesirable effects. The use of herbal medicine as a treatment modality has significantly increased over the last decade due to several factors, principal of which is that herbal medicine is a cheaper alternative with lesser side effects. This review provides a comparative analysis of the some naturally occurring medicinal plants and allopathic drugs that have so far been scientifically studied and reported to have hypotensive or antihypertensive effects.
