Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has begun to influence higher education in noticeable ways, changing how teaching and learning take place across the world. In India, this shift has become more visible with the introduction of “the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020”, which encourages the use of digital technologies to improve the quality and accessibility of education. AI tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, automated grading, chatbots and learning analytics are gradually becoming part of regular academic practices. Against this background, the present study attempts to understand how AI tools contribute to teaching effectiveness, student engagement and overall learning outcomes in higher education institutions. The study was based on a conceptual approach and it uses secondary data collected from recent research articles, policy documents and institutional reports published between 2020 and 2025. By bringing together findings from different sources, the study presented a clear picture of how AI is being used in the educational context. The analysis shows that AI can support personalized learning by allowing students to learn at their own pace and according to their individual needs. It also helps institutions manage administrative work more efficiently and enables better decision-making through data analysis. At the same time, the study points out that the use of AI is not without challenges. Issues such as limited access to technology, especially in rural areas, lack of proper training among faculty members and concerns related to data privacy and ethical use continue to affect its implementation. Another important observation is that while students and institutions are increasingly using AI tools for academic purposes, their actual effectiveness depends on how well they are integrated into the teaching–learning process. The study concludes that AI has strong potential to improve higher education in India but its benefits can be fully realized only when supported by proper infrastructure, training and clear guidelines. It also highlights the need for further research particularly studies that focus on practical outcomes and real classroom experiences.
