Abstract
Food poisoning is a major public health concern caused by the consumption of contaminated food or water containing microorganisms, toxins, chemicals, or spoiled substances. The condition commonly manifests with nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, dehydration, and systemic complications. Ayurveda explains conditions resembling food poisoning under the concepts of Anna Visha, Gara Visha, Viruddha Ahara, and Ama. The branch of Ayurveda dealing with toxicology is known as Agad Tantra, which elaborately describes poisonous substances, manifestations of toxicity, preventive measures, and therapeutic interventions. Ancient Ayurvedic scholars emphasized elimination of toxins, restoration of digestive fire, dietary regulations, and administration of anti-toxic formulations in the management of toxic conditions. The present review critically analyses the role of Agad Tantra in the prevention and management of food poisoning with special emphasis on classical concepts and their modern correlation. Data were collected from classical Ayurvedic texts, contemporary toxicology literature, and published scientific studies. The review highlights that Ayurvedic principles such as Nidana Parivarjana, Vamana, Virechana, Deepana-Pachana, and the use of Vishaghna Dravyas provide a holistic approach in detoxification and gastrointestinal recovery. The study also emphasizes the preventive importance of dietary discipline and food compatibility described in Ayurveda. Agad Tantra offers a scientifically relevant and clinically significant perspective that may support contemporary management strategies for food-borne disorders
