Forensic Importance of Agad Tantra in the Present Era: A Critical Review

Forensic medicine and toxicology play an important role in the administration of justice and public health. Ayurveda has described several medico-legal and toxicological principles thousands of years ago under the branch known as Agad Tantra. Agad Tantra is one of the eight branches of Ayurveda and deals with poisons, poisoning, antidotes, toxic manifestations, and medico-legal aspects associated with death and injury. Classical Ayurvedic scholars elaborately described different types of poisons, methods of poisoning, symptoms of toxicity, examination of poisoned individuals, prognostic signs, and management protocols. Many concepts explained in Agad Tantra show remarkable similarity with present-day forensic toxicology and medico-legal science. In the modern era, increasing incidences of poisoning, food adulteration, drug abuse, environmental toxicity, homicidal poisoning, and forensic investigations have enhanced the relevance of Agad Tantra. The present review critically analyses the forensic importance of Agad Tantra in contemporary practice with special emphasis on toxicology, medico-legal examination, poisoning diagnosis, and preventive perspectives. Data were collected from classical Ayurvedic texts and modern forensic literature. The review highlights that Agad Tantra possesses significant scientific and medico-legal relevance and can contribute meaningfully to present-day forensic toxicology and public health awareness.
