Abstract
This paper presents a simple and cost-effective method for controlling the speed of a DC motor using a single-stage AC-DC converter based solely on a controlled rectifier. Unlike conventional methods that involve DC-DC converters such as buck or boost circuits, the proposed system controls the motor speed by varying the firing angle of silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) in a full-wave rectifier setup. By adjusting the phase angle at which the SCRs are triggered, the average output DC voltage is varied, thereby controlling the motor speed. The system has been simulated and tested, and results show that this method offers a straight forward and reliable approach for applications where precise speed control is critical.
