Assessment of Hypothyroidism in Karol Bagh area in Delhi

Hypothyroidism is a common condition of thyroid hormone deficiency, which is readily diagnosed and managed but potentially fatal in severe cases if untreated. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) estimates that women are five to eight times as likely as men to be hypothyroid. Hypothyroidism can have serious health consequences for girls and women at all stages of the life cycle. Clinical manifestations of Hypothyroidism range from life threatening to no signs or symptoms. The most common symptoms in adults are fatigue, lethargy, cold intolerance, weight gain, constipation, change in voice, and dry skin, but clinical presentation can differ with age and sex, among other factors. The standard treatment is thyroid hormone replacement therapy with Levothyroxine. The present study is done to assess the prevalence of Hypothyroidism among 30 female subjects in Karol Bagh area in Delhi aged between 25 to 50 years on the basis of clinical signs and symptoms and to study their socio-demographic factors and anthropometric measurements. This study showed that 16 out of 30 females (53.33%) were already suffering from Hypothyroidism and were taking anti-thyroid medications; having faced the clinical symptoms of Hypothyroidism like weight gain ,fatigue, low blood pressure, hoarse voice etc. at some point in their life. The remaining 14 females (46.66%) did not show any major symptoms of Hypothyroidism but bio-clinical assessment through blood samples is needed for accurate diagnosis of this disease. This concludes that Hypothyroidism is extremely prevalent in females in the age group of 25-50 years but can be managed with a regular dose of medication and a good lifestyle and healthy eating habits.
