Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Gynecological and breast cancers represent a major public health concern. This study aims to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of these cancers at the National Hospital Center (NHC) of Nouakchott.
Methods: A descriptive retrospective observational study of 98 cases collected from January 1 to December 31, 2024 in the gynecology-obstetrics department of the NHC, in collaboration with the pathology department and the National Oncology Center of Nouakchott.
Results: Mean age was 48 years (range: 20–98). Breast cancer was the most frequent (42.8%), followed by cervical cancer (29.6%), ovarian cancer (19.4%), uterine body cancer (6.1%) and vulvar cancer (2.1%). Invasive ductal carcinoma represented 92.8% of breast cancers, while squamous cell carcinoma constituted 82.8% of cervical cancers. Management included surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, decided in a multidisciplinary meeting.
Conclusion: Gynecological and breast cancers are a major public health problem in Mauritania. Late diagnosis remains an obstacle, highlighting the need to strengthen screening and prevention.
Keywords: Gynecological cancers, breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovary, metrorrhagia, HPV, mammography, FIGO, ACR, Mauritania.
