Abstract
This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences, challenges, and coping strategies of school heads in using technology within their leadership and administrative functions. As educational institutions continue to embrace digital transformation, school heads are increasingly required to integrate technology into school management, communication, instructional supervision, and decision-making processes. The study sought to understand how school heads experience technology use, the challenges they encounter, the strategies they employ to address these challenges, and the insights they gain from their experiences. Using a qualitative phenomenological research design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with selected school heads who actively utilize digital technologies in their respective schools. The participants were purposively selected based on their firsthand experiences with technology integration. The gathered narratives were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns, meanings, and themes that characterized the participants’ experiences. The findings revealed that technology has become an essential component of educational leadership, significantly enhancing communication, collaboration, information management, administrative efficiency, and evidence-based decision-making. However, participants also encountered various challenges, including unstable internet connectivity, inadequate technological resources, limited digital competencies, technical difficulties, and operational disruptions caused by technological limitations. Despite these challenges, school heads demonstrated resilience and adaptability by employing coping strategies such as continuous professional learning, self-directed skill development, collaboration, stakeholder engagement, resource mobilization, contingency planning, and adaptive leadership practices. The study further revealed that effective technology integration extends beyond the availability of digital tools and requires leadership commitment, institutional support, continuous capacity building, and a culture of innovation and collaboration. The essence of the participants’ experiences reflects digital leadership as a transformative process characterized by learning, adaptation, innovation, and shared responsibility. The study recommends strengthening technological infrastructure, expanding professional development opportunities, and enhancing support mechanisms to promote sustainable technology integration and effective digital leadership in schools.
