Abstract
ABSTRACT
Introduction.
Amyand’s hernia is a rare hernia defined as an inguinal hernia that contains the appendix within the hernia sac, named after French surgeon Dr.claudius amyand’s and it accounts to an incidence of 1% out of 20 million inguinal hernias performed yearly worldwide.
Case presentation.
A 45-year-old male cigarette smoker with normal BMI presented to a surgical department clinic with complaint of a pain and swelling in the right inguinal region for the past two weeks initially it was small and gradually increase in size and associated with pain.
On examination, per-abdomen there was an indirect right inguinal hernia incomplete, and reducible type with positive cough impulse.
Patient was diagnosed clinically as indirect right inguinal hernia. Hematological workup, Full blood picture was within normal range.
Patient was subsequently treated with, reduction of a normal appendectomy and tension free hernia repair with mesh and a successful outcome was achieved.
Discussion.
The current generally accepted treatment algorithm for Amyand’s hernia is essentially contingent on the appendix’s condition within the hernia sac as illustrated by Basson and lassanof classification that identifies four types of Amyand’s hernia types and their management.
Controversy exists regarding the application of mesh in type 2 and 3 Amyand’s hernia. More research is needed to provide surgeons with evidence-based standardized approaches for dealing with this unique situation.
Conclusion.
This case report reviews a rare entity known as an Amyand’s hernia that presented as an
Right reducible inguinal hernia that was diagnosed intraoperatively with a normal appendix,
recognized as a type 1 Amyand’s hernia.
