Abstract
Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, is frequently associated with post-ictal depression, a significant mood disturbance occurring after seizures. This mood disorder severely impacts the quality of life and complicates the management of epilepsy. The kindling model, which induces chronic seizure susceptibility through repeated stimulation, is widely used to study epilepsy and its comorbidities, including post-ictal depression. Bacopa monnieri, a traditional Ayurvedic herb known for its neuroprotective, antioxidant, and mood-stabilizing properties, has shown potential in managing mood disorders associated with epilepsy. This review examines the therapeutic effects of Bacopa monnieri in kindling-induced post-ictal depression, exploring its mechanisms of action, including antioxidant activity, reduction of neuroinflammation, and neurotransmitter modulation. Preclinical studies indicate that Bacopa monnieri may alleviate depressive symptoms in epilepsy by countering oxidative stress, restoring neurotransmitter balance, and protecting neuronal integrity. Future directions, including the need for clinical trials and standardized dosing protocols, are discussed to evaluate Bacopa monnieri as an adjunct treatment for mood disturbances in epilepsy. This review highlights Bacopa monnieri's potential to improve quality of life in patients suffering from post-ictal depression and provides a foundation for further research into its clinical applications.
