Abstract
Sleep is a very important process that helps restore the body, mind and supports learning, helps with memory retention, emotional balance and overall wellbeing of an individual. In this paper, we understand and review the effects of sleep deprivation on two main aspects- cognitive functioning and emotional wellbeing, with attention to young adults and working professionals. Many cognitive outcomes such as memory consolidation, retention, attention, executive functions, and decision making are closely tied neural mechanisms in prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and neurotransmitter systems. This paper also explains about the consequences like mental health disorder, anxiety, stress and depression that comes as a result of sleep deprivation. Studies, including evidence from Indian populations, show that irregular sleep patterns contribute to poor academic performance, reduced work efficiency, and greater emotional instability. Sleep loss also activates stress pathways like the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and disrupts hormonal regulation, further worsening mood and cognition. Overall, the paper emphasizes that adequate sleep is essential for optimal brain function, emotional resilience, and long-term mental health
