Screening and treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Background Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common condition encountered in aging men and a common cause of lower urinary tract symptoms. Histological prevalence is common, and disease progression is associated with bladder outflow obstruction. Objective To determine the screening and treatment of Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, PIMS, Islamabad, Pakistan which was performed between September 2023 to March 2025, The total number of patients in our study were 100. There were only male patients in our study. For all patients, we did diagnostic tests (Ultrasound, Blood test, Urine Analysis, and physical examinations for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). We also took the urine analysis score. We took parameters of BMI (kg/m2) for all patients. We excluded women and children from our study. Data was tabulated and analyzed by SPSS version 27. Results In a current study total 100 patients were enrolled. The mean age were 67.5 years, BMI were 26.0 Kg/m2, PVR were 16.5 ml, PSA were 14.5 ng/ml and Prostate size were 33 grams. The median age were 68 years, BMI were 26.0 Kg/m2, PVR were 15 ml, PSA were 14 ng/ml and Prostate size were 33 grams. The minimum age were 55 years, BMI were 24.0 Kg/m2, PVR were 4 ml, PSA were 11 ng/ml and the Prostate size were 29 grams. The maximum age were 92 years, BMI were 29.0 Kg/m2, PVR were 401 ml, PSA were 17 ng/ml and Prostate size were 39 grams. In table 2, the age distribution, the age group from 50-59 were 20 patients. the age group from 60-69 were 34 patients. The age group from 70-79 were 25 patients. The age group from 80-89 were 15 patients. In table 3, treatment distribution, Patient treatment with Alpha Blockers were 70 and its P-value were 0.03. Patient treatment with TURP were 20 and its P-value were 0.01. Patient treatment with open prostatectomy were 10 and its P-value were 0.04. In table 4, urinalysis score distribution, Urinalysis score mild were 30, Moderate were 45 and severe were 24. In our study P-Value were less than (< 0.05). Conclusion We concluded that Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is more common in older male patients. The best and easiest non-invasive diagnostic test, ultrasound, is one of the best modality to diagnose Benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH in the early stage. We also noted that most of the patients were recovered early by an alpha blocker (Flomax).
