Abstract

This article explores how the figure of the “Other” is constructed and represented in English Renaissance drama, particularly in the works of William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe. Drawing on postcolonial theory, feminist criticism, and early modern studies, the paper investigates the ways in which Renaissance playwrights employed characters marked by racial, religious, and gendered difference to interrogate questions of power, identity, and empire. The analysis centers on Othello, The Merchant of Venice, The Jew of Malta, and Tamburlaine, revealing how these plays dramatize the anxieties and contradictions of early modern English identity through the portrayal of the “Other.”
