The Manipulation of Language as a Tool of Political Power: An Analysis of Newspeak in George Orwell's 1984

Language is a fundamental tool for human communication, yet it can also serve as a powerful instrument of political control. George Orwell’s 1984 vividly illustrates this phenomenon through the invention of Newspeak, a constructed language designed to restrict thought, suppress dissent, and maintain totalitarian authority. This study examines the manipulation of language as a mechanism of power in Orwell’s dystopian society. The research explores the structural features of Newspeak, its role in cognitive limitation, and its social and psychological impacts on individuals and society. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as linguistic relativity and discourse-power theory, the study analyzes how the reduction of vocabulary, simplification of grammar, and ideological slogans function to constrain thought and reinforce obedience. The discussion also considers the historical and political context of the novel, linking Orwell’s observations to real-world examples of propaganda, censorship, and information control. Findings reveal that linguistic manipulation is not only a literary device but also a potent means of shaping perception, memory, and social behavior. The study concludes that Orwell’s critique of language highlights the ethical, psychological, and societal consequences of restricting expression, emphasizing the enduring relevance of protecting linguistic freedom in contemporary political and social contexts.
