Abstract
This project demonstrates how a Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack can exploit the Diffie- Hellman key exchange when it is performed without proper authentication. Diffie-Hellman is a widely used method for establishing shared secret keys over an insecure channel.
However, if an attacker can intercept the key exchange, they can deceive both parties and establish separate keys with each one, thus reading and modifying messages unnoticed.
The simulation is implemented in Python using socket programming, where three entities— Alice (sender), Bob (receiver), and Mallory (attacker)—simulate a communication scenario. The attacker Mallory sits between Alice and Bob, intercepting and re-encrypting messages. This exposes the vulnerability in unauthenticated key exchange protocols and highlights the need for secure cryptographic practices such as TLS/SSL and digital certificates.
