Abstract
This study investigated the level of public speaking anxiety among Maguindanaon Senior High School students and its influence on their oral communication performance. The research examined four dimensions of public speaking anxiety: cognitive, physical, behavioral, and general anxiety and preparedness and assessed their relationship with oral communication performance in terms of confidence in speaking, clarity of speech, interaction with others, and language proficiency. Results revealed that cognitive anxiety was experienced most frequently, often affecting students’ thoughts and self-perception during speaking tasks. Meanwhile, physical and behavioral symptoms occurred occasionally. Despite students’ moderate anxiety, their oral communication performance was generally rated satisfactory across all dimensions. Correlational analysis showed significant negative relationships between cognitive anxiety and both speaking confidence and clarity. Conversely, general anxiety and preparedness positively influenced students’ interaction and language proficiency. Regression analysis further confirmed that while anxiety does not significantly influence confidence or clarity, it has a meaningful effect on interaction and language use, particularly when students are better prepared. The study highlights the complex role of public speaking anxiety and underscores the importance of targeted interventions to improve communication skills among Maguindanaon students.
