Abstract
Currently, in Vietnam, in parallel with the development of the economy, job seeking has grown difficult and harsh. The proportion of unemployment has increased day by day. Moreover, enterprises have asked their candidates to demonstrate their performance better, especially English-speaking skills. Thus, many final-year students (Ss) have actively improved themselves with a strong foundation in English communication. However, many school-leavers still find it difficult to enhance their spoken English skills, particularly in presentations – indispensable tasks during job interviews and, of course, in the workplace, such as reporting data, presenting ideas, or proposing solutions et cetera. Therefore, equipping good public speaking skills while still in school is integral for university Ss. Of course, seeking effective teaching methods is indisputable. This study investigated the feasibility of integrating impromptu speaking (IS) activities into teaching presentation skills (PS) in the circumstances of a university in Vietnam. To find out the result, the author combined quantitative research (pre-posttest results) and qualitative research (questionnaire), by integrating IS tasks into the two PS classes with 74 Ss from the University of Finance - Marketing (UFM). The collected data was collected within 3 months from two classes. One class was assigned as a control group and the other’s role was experimental group. The results showed that IS made meaningful impacts on improving PS as well as significantly releasing the Ss' anxiety. Drawing from the result, the writer hoped to suggest a new teaching model integrating IS to strengthen overall speaking skills, specifically PS, for university Ss, especially seniors.
