Abstract
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management in urban area is a day to day challenging task to the authorities. Management of municipal solid waste routing is one of the prime challenging tasks for the local authorities especially in developing countries. The transportation planning of solid waste collection from the bin and to dispose it in dump yard will play a major role in the budget of the MSW management. In many developing countries managing the municipal solid waste is a challenging task due to budget. Improper management of MSW may also leads to serious environmental hazards. In India, Government has implemented various projects to ensure the hygiene and to prevent the environmental hazards. In this study Geographical Information System (GIS) spatial analysis was effectively used to retrieve the result for the optimum utilization of resources in MSW management. Spatial data like satellite image, Global Positioning System (GPS), route maps, solid waste collection location, transfer station, dump yard location and other relevant maps are used for GIS analysis. The prepared thematic maps are effectively incorporated in the GIS platform for further analysis. The ArcGIS network analyst tool was used for effective MSW transportation in Kanchipuram municipality. Optimum route to solid waste disposal was identified with respect of distance, traffic, collection spot and time criteria. By adopting the proposed routes in Kanchipuram municipality may minimize the fuel cost, time, Co2 emissions and vehicle maintenance in effective MSW management. The prepared database may be useful for the local authorities for effective planning and implementation of various municipal solid waste plans in the city.
