Abstract
The construction industry is one of the largest consumers of natural resources and a major contributor to global
waste and carbon emissions. The concept of the circular economy (CE) has emerged as a sustainable alternative to
the traditional linear economy model of “take–make–dispose.” In civil engineering, circular economy principles
focus on reducing material consumption, reusing construction components, and recycling waste materials. This
paper explores the concept of circular economy in civil engineering, its principles, applications, benefits,
challenges, and future prospects. The study highlights how circular construction techniques such as material
recycling, modular construction, and design for disassembly can significantly reduce environmental impacts and
improve resource efficiency.
