Abstract
Homogenous-charge-compression-ignition (HCCI) engines incorporate the benefits of high efficiency of CI engines and low NOx and particulate emissions of SI engines. These benefits are due to auto-ignition process of the lean mixture of fuel and air during compression.
A key characteristic of HCCI combustion is the rapid burning of the fuel/air mixture because of the combustion occurring almost simultaneously throughout the cylinder. Challenges in the successful operation of HCCI engines, such as controlling the combustion phasing, extending the operating range, high unburned hydrocarbon and CO emissions etc are tough enough. Advancements in the control strategies of HCCI includes variable valve actuation, EGR, VCR, multimode, variable induction temperature etc.
