Abstract
Tractor-trailer finds widespread use as a means of transportation in rural like agriculture field and in urban like goods transport as it is often cheaper. The effective design of any mechanical device or assembly demands the predictive knowledge of its behaviour in working condition. It becomes a dire necessity for the designer to know the forces and stresses developed during its operation. In this project the stresses on the knuckle joint and to improve the performance of knuckle joint to a certain extent is going to be studied by using CATIA V5 and FEM will be used in analysis. The aim of the present project is to study calculate the Stresses in knuckle joint using analytical method further study in this direction can made by using various directions of pin and capacity to withstand load. It is also to be noted that instead of Gray cast iron ASTM grade 20 (ISO grade 150, EN-JL 1020) pin we can also use Gray cast iron ASTM grade 35 (ISO grade 250,EN-JL 1040), Gray cast iron ASTM grade 60 (ISO grade 400,EN-JL1070), stainless steel, titanium alloy pin that can further enhance the capacity to withstand higher load. The shape of knuckle joint can be changed for improved properties. One can carry out the analysis by changing the shape in knuckle joint in order to conserve material and energy. The knuckle joint is proposed to develop in the present study is for an applied force of 50KN. The diameter of pin is proposed to be around to be 35 mm. the material of knuckle joint is considered as grey cast iron grade 20, in order to do the stress analysis; mesh was developed for the knuckle joint.
The Mesh consist of 24102 nodes and 12283 element. ANSYS software was run and the equivalent stress, maximum shear stress, total deformation were obtained. Based on the ANSYS analysis it shows that a pin of 35 mm diameter have maximum stress on load of 50KN, if we use a factor of safety of 2. Further FE results for varying diameter of pin at 50KN for same material is found and then again we add different material on pin and found results for 35mm diameter at 50KN, it depicts that as we vary diameter and material of pin it can withstand a load of 50KN.
