An Exploratory Study of the Experiences of Teacher-Advisers in Filipino Campus Journalism

The study aimed to describe the experiences, challenges, coping strategies, and perspectives of novice Filipino campus journalism advisers in selected public schools in Laak, Davao de Oro. It employed a qualitative research design and a phenomenological approach to examine the narratives of six participants through in-depth interviews. The findings revealed that the primary challenges encountered by the advisers included insufficient training, heavy teaching workloads, limited time, and a lack of resources and institutional support. Despite these difficulties, they developed various coping mechanisms such as seeking mentorship, collaborating with colleagues, attending training programs, utilizing digital tools, and strengthening relationships with students. Their perspectives highlighted campus journalism as an essential platform for fostering critical thinking, democratic expression, and the holistic development of young people. Based on the findings, the study proposed the development of a comprehensive support program for novice advisers through mentoring, continuous professional training, and a clearer school support system. The study underscores that strengthening the role of advisers is critical to sustaining a robust and meaningful campus journalism program.
