Abstract
This study aimed to explore and understand the lived experiences, challenges, coping mechanisms, and insights of parents supporting children with special needs in Monkayo West District, Davao de Oro. Using a phenomenological research design, the study focused on how parents navigated caregiving responsibilities, facilitated their child’s learning, and maintained emotional, cognitive, and financial balance in the face of daily challenges. In-depth interviews with six purposively selected participants revealed that their parenting journeys were marked by both difficulties and rewarding moments. Parents faced challenges such as managing behavioral and sensory-related needs, confronting external barriers like bullying and limited opportunities, and coping with financial and environmental constraints. Despite these hardships, they demonstrated resilience, patience, and unwavering commitment by providing positive guidance, leveraging social support networks, and relying on faith and encouragement. The findings further highlighted that parents’ experiences contributed to personal growth, development of long patience, and strengthened emotional bonds with their children. Participants also emphasized the importance of institutional support, accessible programs and workshops, and collaborative partnerships between families and educators to enhance their capacity to support their children. The study calls for action from education officials, school leaders, and local agencies to provide sustained guidance, resources, and inclusive strategies that empower parents while promoting the holistic development of children with special needs. These measures are essential to ensure equal opportunities, emotional well-being, and long-term educational success for learners with diverse needs.
