Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Project Supporting Holistic Improvement through Nurturing Engaged Readers (Project SHINE) on the reading comprehension of Grade 4 pupils at Waloe Elementary School, Loreto, Agusan del Sur, during the School Year 2025–2026. The study employed a quantitative quasi-experimental research design utilizing a two-group pretest-posttest approach. The respondents consisted of 60 Grade 4 pupils identified as frustration readers through the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI), with 30 pupils assigned to the experimental group and 30 pupils assigned to the control group. Data were gathered using a validated 20-item Phil-IRI reading comprehension test and were analyzed using mean and t-test statistics.
The findings revealed that both the control and experimental groups were at the frustration level during the pretest, obtaining mean scores of 6.67 and 6.70, respectively. After the intervention, the control group remained at the frustration level with a mean score of 8.40, while the experimental group improved to the instructional level with a mean score of 11.80.
Further analysis showed no significant difference between the pretest scores of the control and experimental groups, indicating that both groups had comparable reading comprehension levels before the intervention. However, significant differences were found between the pretest and posttest scores of both groups. The experimental group demonstrated a substantially greater improvement compared to the control group. Moreover, a significant difference was found between the posttest scores of the control and experimental groups, confirming the effectiveness of Project SHINE in improving pupils’ reading comprehension.
The results suggest that the implementation of Project SHINE significantly enhanced the reading comprehension skills of Grade 4 pupils through guided reading sessions, peer reading, peer tutoring, vocabulary enrichment activities, and comprehension-focused tasks. Therefore, the adoption of Project SHINE and similar structured reading intervention programs is highly recommended to improve learners’ reading comprehension, literacy development, and overall academic performance.
