Safeguarding Academic Integrity: From the Experiences of English Teachers on AI Utilization

This study explored the experiences, challenges, and strategies in safeguarding academic integrity amid AI utilization among English teachers in Monkayo District, Division of Davao de Oro, Philippines. Employing a qualitative phenomenological research design, data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews to selected English teachers. This research aims to capture authentic experiences of the English teachers including their challenges, coping mechanism, insights and suggestions in maintaining honesty and authenticity of students work amid AI utilization to safeguard academic integrity. The study revealed that safeguarding academic integrity, despite the presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), can be maintained through designing a process-based assessment, real-time writing sessions with constant cross-evaluation, multi-layered verification, collaboration with colleagues and constant implementation of explicit rules and guidelines. These approaches and practices help the development of critical thinking, encourage authenticity and originality of work and promote responsible and ethical use of AI. Overall, the widespread of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is a serious threat to academic integrity. However, when properly and ethically used, AI can be beneficial in teaching and learning without compromising the ethical standards of academic work. To maintain this, teachers and schools must formulate clear and unified policies and guidelines that promote responsible use of AI.
