Effectiveness of Digital Storytelling in Teaching and Learning Process: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Digital storytelling (DST) is a student-centered approach to education that focuses on engaging students in the learning process. It has been studied extensively in educational research for over two decades, providing a voice for marginalized groups and making lessons more enjoyable. The growing interest in DST in teaching is requiring further exploration to understand its current practice and future scope. This paper systematically reviews the literature on digital storytelling in education, analyzing studies published between 2015 and 2024. The research focuses on the research question of examining the role of digital storytelling in improving teaching and learning processes. The methodological process used the PRISMA protocol to select and review relevant studies on the use of digital storytelling in education. This study synthesizes educational studies on digital storytelling, revealing its effectiveness in improving learning across primary to tertiary education levels. The studies reviewed provide empirical evidence supporting its benefits, including enhanced communication and learning. The study highlights the growing interest in exploring digital storytelling as a valuable tool for learning. It also highlights its role in enhancing 21st-century skills like creative thinking, communication, and research, facilitating learning and positively impacting academic achievement.
