Abstract

In Assamese literature, the predominant heterosexual ideology often overshadows the voices and narratives of queer individuals, whose identities occupy marginal positions. However, queer narratives from the state give a stark reality of the lived experiences of queers. This paper, through Aruni Kashyap’s short fiction, His Father’s Disease (2019), aims to explore the gendered realities in Assam through its protagonist, Anil, who is a homosexual and must conceal his identity in the process of becoming the village headman. The paper, through the lived experiences of Anil, criticises the gendered notion that one needs to be more masculine to get a higher position, resulting in an identity crisis among the queers. This paper also attempts to explore the misconception among the natives towards homosexuality, who think it is a disease that can be cured.
