FINDING THEIR VOICE: EXPLORING THE SPEAKING CONFIDENCE OF INDIGENOUS PROFESSIONALS

This study explored the lived experiences of Indigenous Professionals in Maragusan, Davao de Oro, focusing on how they develop and express speaking confidence in school, workplace, and community contexts. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, the researcher conducted in depth interviews with eight Indigenous Professionals to capture their narratives and perspectives. The findings revealed that speaking confidence was fostered through experiences such as classroom reporting, seminars, emceeing, and learning local dialects. Supportive environments, including encouragement from mentors, colleagues, and family members, played a significant role in strengthening confidence. Challenges such as self doubt, linguistic anxiety, perfectionism, and fear of judgment were common, yet participants coped through continuous practice, preparation, mentorship, and embracing responsibilities. While discrimination, stereotyping, and accent bias undermined confidence, cultural pride emerged as a powerful source of resilience and empowerment. The study concluded that speaking confidence among Indigenous Professionals is cultivated through experience, preparation, mentorship, and affirmation of Indigenous identity. It underscores the importance of culturally responsive mentorship, authentic speaking opportunities, and institutional support in empowering Indigenous voices. The research recommends that schools, communities, and organizations implement communication training, leadership initiatives, and culturally grounded programs to further strengthen the speaking confidence of Indigenous Professionals.
