Abstract
School dropout remains a critical socio-educational and environmental issue in rural India. This study examines the impact of major government schemes—such as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), and Kanyashree Prakalpa—on school dropout rates in Jagadishpur Gram Panchayat, Howrah district, West Bengal. Using a mixed-method approach (household survey, school records, and statistical analysis), the study evaluates how socio-economic, environmental, and institutional factors interact with policy interventions. The findings indicate that while government schemes have significantly improved enrolment and retention at the primary level, challenges persist in upper primary and secondary stages due to poverty, gender disparity, infrastructure gaps, and environmental vulnerabilities. The study concludes with policy recommendations for sustainable educational development
