Abstract
Research on the effect of corrosion on underground water in some selected areas of Jema’a local government area was carried out. The local government is located within the basement complex area of the northern Nigeria and is underlain by Pre-cambriam basement rocks which are mostly granites. The study area lies between latitude and N and longitude and E and its population has grown tremendously in the last 30 years. The drastic increase in population has given rise to challenges in getting clean water for healthy living due to water corrosion. In order to delineate areas with corrosive underground water, the researchers used electrical resistivity method which is a function of the measured impedance (ratio of potential to current) and the obtained data was plotted in order to look for anomalous regions. The results on the plotted map depicted areas with resistivity values of 1-20Ωm, 21 Ωm - 70Ωm, 71 Ωm-190Ωm, 191- 255Ωm up to over 3000 Ωm. From the findings, some areas in Bayan loko at a depth below 3m have very low resistivity values below 20Ωm an indication that the region is highly corrosive. The underground water in those locations are highly contaminated resulting in low resistivity giving rise to high corrosivity ratio. This contamination could be due to dumping of refuse from gulley erosion and railway metallic reaction with water. Hence, Water from boreholes and wells within Bayan loko are brownish in colouration when exposed to air for some few days in a basin. Locations such as Zikpak fada, Takau I and II with resistivity values between 70Ωm- 190 Ωm are slightly corrosive. The layers of areas with resistivity values ranging from 191 Ωm to 255 Ωm are practically non corrosive. Layers with resistivity values above 255.5 which include U/fari, U/Baki, U/musa and U/masara are also highly corrosive. It is therefore, recommended that boreholes should be drilled beyond the depth at which the underground water was found to be corrosive.
