Abstract
Out-of-field teaching is a phenomenon that teachers around the globe are facing. The study examined the lived experiences, challenges, coping mechanisms and insights of the private senior high school teachers. This study which used quantitative phenomenological research design was conducted at Assumption College of Nabunturan, in Davao de Oro and Assumpta School of Tagum, in Davao del Norte. The six private senior high school teachers teaching out-of-field subjects were selected through purposive sampling and underwent in-depth interviews. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the responses of the out-of-field teachers pertaining to their experiences teaching subjects not in line with their majors. The findings showed that teachers faced both challenges and growth. The findings further highlighted increased preparation demands, limited mastery of subjects and classroom management issues resulting to hesitations, self-doubt and stress. However, these taught the teachers the importance of learning, responsibility, and adaptability. The study recommended targeted subject training, mentoring, adequate preparation time, and access to resources to enhance teacher competence and well-being. School leaders could turn out-of-field teaching into a solution for staffing needs, but also a rich and empowering professional experience for teachers and a worthwhile learning experience for students.
