Abstract
Reading comprehension played a pivotal role in the academic journey of the students. One of the major problems in reading in the Philippines nowadays is the poor reading comprehension, which leads to poor academic achievements of the learners. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy as a teaching approach in enhancing reading comprehension skills. The study utilized quasi-experimental research with one-group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted in Tagugpo National High School, which involved 50 grade 8 students as research samples. The researcher used Phil-IRI reading passages and questionnaires as instruments for data collection. The learners underwent a pretest, intervention, and posttest. The results showed that the students’ mean score in the pretest was low and did not meet the expected level of comprehension. After implementing the strategy, the students’ mean score increased to a fairly satisfactory level. The study found that there is a significant difference in the mean score of the students in pretest and posttest. The results suggested that the employed strategy effectively enhanced students’ reading comprehension skills. Therefore, the study concluded that the use of the QAR strategy is recommended as an intervention for improving reading comprehension skills.
