Abstract
The purpose of this research was to explore and understand the experiences, challenges, coping mechanisms, and insights of Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG) Advisers in the Department of Education, particularly in Laak, Davao de Oro. Using a phenomenological approach, in-depth interviews with multiple SSLG advisers provided a comprehensive understanding of their roles in mentoring student-leaders. Findings revealed that SSLG advisers were crucial in guiding student-leaders through the complexities of their positions, fostering personal growth and leadership skills. They also emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment where communication, mutual trust, and feedback played pivotal roles in student development. The study identified several challenges faced by advisers, including time constraints, lack of resources, and balancing multiple responsibilities. Despite these difficulties, mentors employed various strategies to cope, such as providing constructive feedback, setting clear expectations, and creating opportunities for student-leaders to take on meaningful roles. The research also highlighted the need for administrative support, with school leaders and DepEd officials being urged to provide resources, professional development programs, and structured mentoring systems to alleviate advisers' burdens and enhance their mentoring effectiveness. Based on these findings, the study recommended the implementation of leadership development programs, structured training, and consistent feedback mechanisms for SSLG advisers. The results suggested that enhancing mentoring frameworks, advocating for more resources, and fostering a collaborative school environment could improve the mentoring process and empower both advisers and student-leaders. This would contribute to the long-term success of student governance and leadership in the school community.
