Abstract
This study explored the predictive relationship between indicators of learning engagement and the English language competence of college students at Monkayo College of Arts, Sciences, and Technology, Monkayo, Davao de Oro. Specifically, it aimed to determine whether behavioral, emotional, and cognitive forms of engagement significantly influence English language competence. Utilizing a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design, the study surveyed 95 first-year English major students through an adapted questionnaire and a researcher-developed instrument. Data were analyzed using mean, Pearson’s r, and multiple regression analysis. Findings indicated that there was no statistically significant linear correlation between overall learning engagement and English language competence. However, results from the multiple regression analysis revealed that cognitive engagement alone had a statistically significant positive effect on students’ English language competence. These results suggest that while general engagement may not directly correlate with language proficiency, the role of cognitive engagement is a critical factor in enhancing English competence among college learners. Therefore, educational strategies that prioritize and strengthen cognitive engagement may contribute meaningfully to improving English language proficiency in higher education settings.
