Abstract
This study investigates the influence of cooperative learning approaches in promoting social skills and academic achievement among fifth-grade students. Anchored in Slavin’s Social Cohesion Theory, the research explores how collaborative learning and peer interaction contribute to both cognitive and interpersonal development. The study utilized cooperative learning strategies, including group activities, collaborative projects, and peer tutoring, to assess their effectiveness in enhancing communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Findings revealed that cooperative learning significantly promoted the development of students’ social skills. Learners became more confident in expressing their thoughts, working harmoniously with classmates, and resolving conflicts constructively. These improvements in interpersonal relationships helped foster a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment. However, despite noticeable gains in social development, the study found no statistically significant correlation between cooperative learning and academic achievement. This suggests that while cooperative strategies enhance engagement and collaboration, academic outcomes may be more closely tied to individual study habits, teaching methods, and assessment practices. The results highlight the value of incorporating cooperative learning to support students' social-emotional growth, even if academic gains are not directly measurable. For educators and policymakers, these findings emphasize the importance of adopting instructional strategies that nurture both social and emotional competencies alongside academic instruction. The study concludes by recommending further investigation into additional variables that might influence academic outcomes and calls for long-term studies on the impact of cooperative learning in various educational settings to better understand its full potential in fostering holistic student development.
