Abstract
Integrating Global Citizenship Education (GCED) into science instruction is vital in preparing learners with the knowledge, values, and competencies necessary for an increasingly interconnected world. This study aimed to develop and assess Learning Launchers—interactive, technology-assisted instructional materials that incorporate GCED competencies within selected Grade 9 science topics: the Quantum Mechanical Model of the Atom, Types of Compounds, and Percentage Composition of a Compound. These materials were designed to foster cognitive skills, global awareness, and social responsibility through contextualized and participatory learning experiences. A mixed-methods research design was employed, involving pretest-posttest evaluations, content validation, and analysis of stakeholder perceptions. Prior to the intervention, students demonstrated limited engagement in cognitive skills (mean = 3.25), with the pretest mean score (42.61) classified as “Average Mastery.” Following the implementation of the Learning Launcher, the posttest mean increased significantly to 68.19 (“Moving Towards Mastery”), with the t-test result (t = 24.16, p < 0.001) indicating a statistically significant improvement. Content validation conducted by Teachers, Experts, and Master Teachers/School Heads using six indicators yielded an overall rating of “Strongly Agree,” with Experts assigning the highest mean (4.85). However, the “Format” indicator received comparatively lower evaluations from Teachers and School Heads (mean = 4.29), indicating a potential area for refinement. ANOVA results revealed significant differences in Format ratings (F = 5.20, p < 0.001), with post-hoc tests showing Experts rated it significantly higher. Overall, the findings support the effectiveness and pedagogical relevance of the Learning Launcher in enhancing science mastery while advancing GCED integration in the classroom context.
