Abstract
Mind mapping is increasingly recognized as a cognitive tool that transcends rote memorization and fosters deeper learning and innovation. Drawing from key psychological and pedagogical theories, namely Dual Coding Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Bloom’s Taxonomy, this paper explores how mind mapping facilitates a cognitive transition from memorization to innovation. Rooted in dual coding theory and constructivist learning principles, mind mapping enables learners to visually organize and integrate knowledge, promoting retention and ideation. This theoretical paper explores the cognitive underpinnings of mind mapping, situating it within contemporary educational psychology frameworks. It argues that mind mapping bridges lower-order thinking skills like recall with higher-order thinking skills such as synthesis, problem-solving, and creative innovation. The proposed theoretical model presents four cognitive stages in the learning process: encoding and memorization, conceptual organization, application and analysis, and finally, synthesis and innovation. Through this model, mind mapping is positioned as a pedagogical strategy that transitions learners from passive recipients of information to active, creative knowledge constructors. Implications for curriculum design, classroom practice, and assessment are discussed, with recommendations for integrating mind mapping into science education at all levels. The paper concludes by proposing future research directions, including empirical validation of the cognitive model and exploration of digital mind mapping tools in enhancing metacognitive and creative skills. Through this theoretical lens, mind mapping is redefined not just as a study aid but as a cognitive scaffold for transforming passive learners into innovative thinkers. By synthesizing theoretical perspectives with practical applications, this paper demonstrates that mind mapping can act as a cognitive engine driving educational transformation, from memorization to innovation.
