Abstract
The present study investigates the genotoxic effects of chronic exposure to the organophosphate pesticide profenofos and the potential protective role of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the freshwater bivalve Lamellidens marginalis. Bivalves were divided into control and experimental groups, with treatments including profenofos exposure alone and in combination with L-ascorbic acid (50 mg/L), followed by a recovery phase in normal and L-ascorbic acid enriched water. DNA content was quantified in various tissues (gills, gonads, digestive gland, mantle, foot, and whole soft body mass) using the diphenylamine method. Results showed a significant, time-dependent reduction in DNA content across all tissues following profenofos exposure. However, co-exposure to L-ascorbic acid significantly mitigated DNA damage, and recovery in vitamin C-treated water led to a faster and more complete restoration of DNA levels compared to natural recovery.
