Holding Onto Heritage: The Mansaka Elders Fight To Preserve Culture Amid Generational Shifts

Preserving indigenous culture in a rapidly modernizing and globalized world remains a pressing concern, particularly for the Mansaka elders of Barangay Golden Valley, Mabini, Davao de Oro. This qualitative ethnographic study aims to explore the lived experiences, challenges, strategies, and recommendations of Mansaka elders in sustaining their cultural heritage. Guided by thematic analysis, the research engaged 5-10 elders through in-depth interviews to uncover insights into their role as custodians of traditions, rituals, and language. Key findings highlight the resilience of the Mansaka community, as elders rely on oral storytelling, community engagement, and traditional practices to bridge generational gaps. However, challenges such as modernization, economic pressures, and educational barriers impede cultural transmission. To address these, the study underscores initiatives like mother tongue-based education, intergenerational workshops, and government support as pivotal to cultural preservation. The results provide valuable perspectives on the adaptability of indigenous communities in preserving cultural identity while advocating for collaborative efforts between elders, youth, and policymakers.
