Abstract
The Alternative Learning System (ALS) in the Philippines is a parallel learning system that provides practical option to the existing formal instruction, offering non-formal education to out-of-school youth and adults. This study aimed to design and develop a Contextualized Instructional Material (CIM) for the 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World subject addressing the learning needs of Grade 11 ALS students at Los Arcos National High School, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, Philippines. Addressing the problem of limited instructional materials, the study utilized a developmental evaluative research design and collected quantitative data from evaluators, which included teachers as implementers and students as users. The findings identified 11 least learned competencies, leading to the development of a proposed CIM. The material was evaluated based on the expert’s perception in terms of the content, language, layout, and illustrations, and was found to be fully compliant. The study revealed no significant difference in the overall perception of the material between teachers and students. There were significant differences in perceptions regarding specific areas such as content, language, and layout. These differences highlighted the need for adjustments, which were incorporated based on expert suggestions and recommendations. The enhanced CIM was thus developed, demonstrating improved alignment with educational needs. This study underscores the significance of contextualized instructional materials in enhancing the learning experience and outcomes for ALS students, addressing the gap in available resources, and ensuring that educational content is relevant and accessible.
