Abstract
The purpose of this exploratory research was to understand the significant impact societal beauty norms have on teenagers and young adults, especially regarding their mental health, self-esteem, and behavior. As media-driven ideals become increasingly prevalent, the study seeks to examine how media, peer pressure, and cultural expectations shape beauty perceptions. Using a survey method, data was collected from individuals aged 13-25 living in the capital, Delhi, focusing on the media’s role in shaping beauty standards, peer pressure, gender differences, and cultural influences. This survey revealed significant psychological and behavioral effects caused by beauty standards. Among the key findings were increased self-comparison, heightened social anxiety, and reduced self-worth among respondents. Overall, the research concludes that societal beauty standards perpetuate unrealistic expectations, significantly affecting the mental well-being and everyday behavior of individuals.
