Ripple Effect: Exploring the Influence of Emotional Contagion and Peer Interaction on Student Behavior

This study examined the influence of emotional contagion and peer interaction on student behavior. Using a correlational research design, the study aimed to determine whether and how students’ emotional sensitivity and social relationships influence their behavioral outcomes in the classroom. Participants were 100 selected students from three private secondary in Agusan Carmelites schools, Father Urios High School-Prosperidad-ADS, Inc., Mt. Carmel College of San Francisco, Inc. and Mount Carmel High School – Rosario-ADS, Inc. during the academic year 2025–2026. Data were gathered through validated survey questionnaires measuring emotional contagion in terms of social and interpersonal functioning, positive and negative emotionality, and well-being, while peer interaction was assessed in terms of trust, intimacy, and insightfulness. Student behavior was measured in the domains of affiliation, autonomy climate, and negative peer interaction. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between emotional contagion, peer interaction, and student behavior. Results further indicated that emotional contagion was the strongest predictor of student behavior, suggesting that students’ emotional responsiveness and shared affective experiences directly influence how they act and relate to others. Although peer interaction did not significantly predict behavior, it served as a relational pathway through which emotional contagion was expressed, highlighting its complementary role. Overall, the study underscore that students’ emotions are contagious and transformative, shaping the tone of classroom interactions and influencing behavioral patterns. The study conclude that fostering emotional awareness and empathy within peer groups can promote cooperation, respect, and emotional stability in school environments. It recommend that educators integrate socio-emotional learning and peer-support strategies into classroom management to enhance students’ emotional intelligence and behavioral regulation.
